Get Started

During the first 5 days of the semester you should:

  • Read through EVERYTHING at the course website.  If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Verify that you can access the lecture videos and that you understand how these videos are organized.
  • Review this document about Using WebAssign for Math Classes at NCSUFollow the instructions in that document to create an account (if applicable) and add yourself to the class WebAssign roster.  The class key needed to add yourself to the roster is mailed to all students on the first day of classes.
  • Log into WebAssign using your Cengage account credentials and complete the Introduction homework assignment.
    • For the first 14 days of the course you will be able to use WebAssign for free, but you will eventually need to pay the $27.95 fee (or make use of a Cengage Unlimited subscription, if applicable) to access and complete the homework assignments and the tests.  For best results, go ahead and make this payment online via WebAssign as soon as you can. (There are no other costs or extra fees associated with this course.  There is no need to upgrade to Cengage Unlimited for this course.  You can get everything you need - homework, tests, everything - for the much lower $27.95 price.)
  • Verify that you have received an introductory email from both the instructor and from Jenn.  These introductory emails will be sent to your NCSU email address, as is required for official University correspondence.  We send these introductory emails on the first day of class.
  • Set up your testing appointments with DELTA for tests 1, 2, and 3.  (If it will allow you to sign up for the final exam do that as well, but usually it will make you wait until later in the semester to sign up for times during the final exam period.) Don't put off signing up for your tests because the most desirable time slots fill up VERY quickly.
  • If you require special testing accommodations due to a disability, make sure that you understand all the steps that you need to take and begin the process of signing up for these services.
  • If you live more than 50 miles from campus and are interested in taking the tests remotely at an approved location with an approved proctor, make sure that you understand all the steps that you need to take and begin the process of signing up for this service.
  • Think about how you will make time for this course and come up with a schedule for yourself.  Consider this:  If this was a traditional in-class math course you'd spend approximately 3 hours per week in class, another few hours on homework, and additional time before tests preparing and studying.  To do well in the online version of the course you should expect to spend at least this much time watching the lecture videos, doing the homework assignments, and preparing for tests.  Students who do well in this course (grade of B or better) report spending an average of 5.5 hours per week on the course work.  These students reported that setting aside specific days/times each week when they would "go to class" (watch the videos and do the homework) and sticking to that schedule was essential to their success.
